PAST – PRESENT – FUTURE
In our interactive multi-media exhibition, anyone interested can gain a variety of insights into the subsequent use of the former Tegel Airport. The city of tomorrow is being created right here: in the middle of Berlin!
Urban life, living and working are being rethought on the 500-hectare site of the former Tegel Airport. With the Urban Tech Republic as a research and industrial park for green technologies, the Schumacher Quartier as a socio-ecological residential district and a huge nature and recreation area, Berlin TXL is one of the largest and most forward-looking urban development projects in Europe. How can and do we want to build our cities in the future? What does today and yesterday have to do with tomorrow? And what is currently happening on the Berlin TXL site? Our digital and interactive exhibition invites you to discover, recognize and think ahead.
MATERIAL CULTURE BERLIN TXL 2024: A building for the future.
September 07, 2024 – May 25, 2025
Fifty years ago, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Nickels wrote architectural history with the former Tegel Airport. We are celebrating this anniversary with an exhibition that sheds light on the highlights of the past and at the same time builds a bridge to the transformation of the airport into a place of innovation. What story do the buildings of the former airport tell and how will this story be continued in the heart of the new industrial and research park for urban technologies?
What visions of the city do we have today – against the backdrop of climate change and the energy transition? What is circular construction? What bio-based materials are available in contrast to conventional practice? The digital and analog exhibits in the exhibition offer interdisciplinary approaches to answers to these questions.
These include original plans by the architects, Wolfgang Feierbach’s visionary plastic design and contemporary art formerly exhibited at the airport. As well as objects recovered from the site that tell of its former use as a military training area. Or a telephone that can be used to call Mother Earth to ask how she is doing.
