MATERIAL CULTURE BERLIN TXL 2024. An architectural masterpiece for the future.
7 September – 30 November 2024
Fifty years ago, the architects Gerkan, Marg and Nickels made architectural history with the former Tegel Airport. We are celebrating this anniversary with an exhibition that showcases the highlights of the past while simultaneously building a bridge to the transformation of the airport into an innovation hub. What story do the buildings of the former airport tell and how will this be continued at the heart of the new research and industrial park for urban technologies?
What visions do we have of ‘the city’ today – against a backdrop of climate change and energy transition? What is circular construction? What bio-based materials are there in contrast to conventional practices? The digital and analogue exhibits in the show offer interdisciplinary approaches to answering these questions.
These include the architects’ original plans, Wolfgang Feierbach’s visionary plastic design, and contemporary artworks that were formerly displayed in the airport. As well as objects found on the site that speak of its former use as a military training ground. Or a phone that allows you to call Mother Earth to ask her how she’s doing.
PAST – PRESENT – FUTURE
In our interactive multimedia exhibition, visitors get various insights into the future development of the former Tegel Airport. The city of the future is emerging right here – in the heart of Berlin!
On the 500-hectare site of the former Tegel Airport, urban living, accommodation and work are being re-imagined. With the Urban Tech Republic as a research and industrial park for green technologies, the Schumacher Quartier as a socio-ecological residential district, and a huge nature and recreation area, Berlin TXL is one of the largest urban development projects in Europe and a model for the future. How do we want to build our cities in the future and what will be possible? What do yesterday and today have to do with tomorrow? And what is actually happening on the Berlin TXL site right now? Our digital, interactive exhibition invites you to discover, understand and imagine.
